The state rejected Roshan Patel’s efforts to sell booze in the Annex neighborhood, not because of all the complaints from neighbors—but because New Haven had reached a little-known state-calculated limit for the number of liquor stores allowed within its boundaries. Meanwhile, across town, a Westville Village landlord who beat Patel out for the last permit (by one day) has since seen her own plans dashed, and may end up opening her liquor store instead ... over in the Annex. The two neighborhood liquor-store dramas came to a head in recent weeks.

May 18, 2015, The New Haven Independent, by Paul Bass - United Illuminating crew members started felling trees in Edgewood Park Monday—a day after nature started the job for them. UI plans to remove approximately 35 trees, including 15-20 locust trees along Edgewood Avenue near the West River, in the park as part of a power upgrade. With two officers guiding traffic along Edgewood through the park, the operation began Monday.

May 12, 2015, The New Haven Independent, by David Sepulveda - There was a buzz in the air. Visitors were coming, lots of them. Like a family hosting out-of-town guests, Westville’s community engine of businesses, residents, and volunteers revved up to roll out the neighborhood’s annual Artwalk festival, held over Mother’s Day weekend. In the opening hours of the festival, energetic children took to the soft bed of mulch that had been spread over an empty sand lot where Delaney’s Restaurant once stood.

May 7, 2015, The New Haven Independent, by Paul Bass - A new floor of wood chips will cover the vacant lot that used to house Delaney’s at the crossroads of Westville Village, as the dream of rebuilding the popular restaurant and tap room there has been put on hold. A dramatic all-night fire destroyed Delaney’s on Aug. 25, ripping a slice out of the neighborhood’s commercial heart. Since then the lot has lain vacant as the property’s owner, Ronald Groves, and Delaney’s operator Peter Gresme haggled with insurers and sought to build a new version of Delaney’s.
