Westville Soldiers' Memorial Gateway
Westville Soldiers' Memorial Gateway is a Civil War Monument located in the heart of Westville. Because it is constructed in the exedra form and is canted toward the intersection of Philip Street and Whalley Avenue it serves as an entranceway to Beecher Park where Mitchell Library is located. Designed by a very successful architect of the time, Ferdinand VonBeren, the monument is made of indigenous traprock and was dedicated in 1915 at a final cost of $15,000.
Next time you are walking in Westville note how the design of this monument invites one to move up the risers from the street and into the park or to sit for a while on the curved benches overlooking the village.
Flower barrels located at the memorial are planted and maintained by Westville Block Watch 303.
